PART 56K: ELECTRICITY
- Circuits are protected against overload by fuses or circuit breakers of correct type and capacity
- Distribution boxes are provided with a disconnect device for each branch circuit, designed so visual observation shows when circuit is denergized, and box labeled to show which circuit each device controls
- Permanent splices and repairs made to power cables are as near as possible to the original as to mechanical strength, insulated, and damage protection
- Power circuits and mechanical equipment shall be deenergized before maintenance work is done: power switches locked out, warning notices posted and signed, locks or preventative devices
- Principal power switches are labeled to show which units they control
- All metal enclosing or encasing electrical circuits are grounded
- Metal fencing and metal buildings enclosing transformers and switchgear are grounded
- Continuity and resistance of grounding systems are tested immediately after installation, repair, modification, and annually thereafter; make records available for the inspector upon request
- Inspection and cover plates on electrical equipment and junction boxes are in place at all times (except during testing or repairs)
- Operating controls are installed so they can be operated without danger of contact with energized conductors
- Switches and starting boxes are of safe design and capacity
- Powerlines and phone circuits are protected against short circuits and lightning
- Transformer are enclosed and are kept locked against unauthorized entry
PART 56M: MACHINERY
- ROPS and seat belts are installed on mobile equipment
- Manually-operated horns or other audible warning devices on self-propelled equip are maintained in functional condition
- When operator has rear obstructed view, equip has: 1) automatic reverse-activated signal alarm, 2) wheel-mounted bell alarm, 3) discriminating backup alarm, or 4) an observer to signal safe back up
- Before starting crushers or moving self-propelled mobile equip, operators sound a warning
- Before starting a conveyor, operator visually checks to make sure all persons are in the clear (if entire conveyor visible to operator) or make audible/visible warning and start conveyor within 30 seconds
- Machinery, equip, and tools are not used beyond the design capacity intended by mfr where such use may create a hazard to persons
- When mobile equip is unattended or not in use, dippers/buckets/scraper blades are lowered to the ground; other movable parts (i.e. booms) shall be mechanically secured or positioned to prevent movement
- Mobile equip is not left unattended unless controls are placed in park and parking brake is set; when parked on a grade, wheels or tracks shall be either chocked or turned into a bank
- Welding operations are well-ventilated and shielded from arc flash
- Operator conducts pre-shift inspection prior to using mobile equipment; note any safety defects; report and record defects and if any hazards, take out of service
